Theatre (or theater, see spelling differences) is the branch of the
performing arts defined by Bernard Beckerman as what “occurs when one
or more persons, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to
another or others.  Theatres run the gamut from amateur to
professional.  Theatre Ontario provides theatre practitioners
throughout Ontario with training and information to enhance and support
their art form.  Theatre Kingston gratefully acknowledges the support
of these organizations:.  Theatre Panache is a non-profit theatre
company based in Hudson, Quebec.  Theatre Panache’s mandate is to
develop new talent and to produce and tour new Canadian work.  Theatre
Tokens is the UK theatre industry’s national gift voucher scheme
administered by The Society of London Theatre, created to encourage UK
theatre going.

The most popular forms of theater in the medieval Islamic world were
puppet theatre (which included hand puppets, shadow plays and
marionette productions) and live passion plays known as ta’ziya, where
actors re-enact episodes from Muslim history.  The most recognisable
figures in theatre are the directors, playwrights, and actors, but
theatre is a highly collaborative endeavour.  The artistic staff is
assisted by technical theatre personnel who handle creation and
execution of the production.  Drama (literally translated as action,
from a verbal root meaning “To do”) is the branch of theatre in which
speech, either from written text (plays), or improvised is paramount.
Music and theatre have always had a close relationship.  Musical
theatre is a form of theatre combining music, songs, dance routines,
and spoken dialogue.

Modern musical theatre emerged from the variety shows and “follies”
of the early 20th century and includes a combination of dialogue, song
and dance, and spectacle.  Over 75 years old, Theatre BC is one of
Canada’s liveliest grassroots arts organizations in British Columbia.
is proud parent to approximately 80 community theatre groups across the
British Columbia, assisting the growth and development of what used to
be referred to as amateur dramatics.  The Theatre BC offices are now
located at the new.  I believe that theatre celebrates what it is to be
human.

I believe in the transformative power of theatre.  These
professional calibre shows on our mainstage and studio theatres form an
integral part of program curriculum.  On behalf of the talented faculty
and students who present Sheridan’s annual series of performances, I
would like to welcome you to another exciting and entertaining Theatre
Sheridan season.  Whether you are a newcomer to Theatre Sheridan, or
one of our many subscribers, I know you will be impressed by the
professional calibre of Theatre Sheridan’s diverse and ambitious
productions.  Thanks are due to the Friends of Theatre Sheridan,
corporate partners and other donors, who help make it possible for us
to continue providing a launching pad for the careers of some of
Canada’s top performers.  Craig’s ideas constitute a complete
antithesis to the naturalistic theatre’s concern with precise
historical detail; like Appia, he rejected illusionism and advocated a
theatre of romantic ‘mood’, in which dance and mime would be prominent.

Copeau insisted that the art of the theatre is the art of acting,
and in some of his productions used only lighting and a few key props
to establish the setting.  Experimental work was also done in the
Russian theatre at the beginning of the century, especially in the
period immediately following the Revolution.  Aspects of previous
experiment in several styles were incorporated into the epic theatre of
Erwin Piscator and Bertolt Brecht, who sought to ‘distance’ the
spectators from the stage spectacle so that they could think more
critically about what they saw.

In one form or another, the contemporary experimental theatres
continue to explore and develop the implications of all the major
influences of the 20th century.  In recent years, the work of such
companies as the American Living Theatre, the Polish Laboratory Theatre
(see Jerzy Grotowski), and Peter Brook’s International Centre for
Theatre Research (as well as his productions for the Royal Shakespeare
Company in Britain) have excited much interest and some controversy.
